The backwards way to honour God
Why taking more from God is actually how you glorify Him
GM. This is Soul Food, we turn the bible into an easy-to-follow recipe.
πΊοΈπΊοΈπΊοΈ Hereβs whatβs on the map today:
In Psalm 116:12-13, David asks: "What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?" Meaning what shall I give to the Lord.
You'd expect the answer to be "I'll give more, serve more, do more." But David's response is: "I will take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord."
David uses the verb "to take". When we want to honour God for His goodness, we don't impress Him with our offerings. We glorify Him by taking more of what He's already provided and asking Him for even more.
This is about recognising that God's heart is revealed when we approach Him with expectation rather than obligation. Like Gideon hiding in the winepress, we often settle for barley-level prayers when we have access to a winepress life.
Think about it from a parent's point of view. What brings more joy: your child grudgingly doing chores to "pay you back" for your love, or your child running to you with excitement, knowing you'll provide everything they need?
God's bank account is the size of Jupiter, and He doesn't want to meet your needs, He wants to exceed them. When you take more of His salvation, peace, and provision, you're being biblical.
The second part is equally important: "call upon the name of the Lord." This means we ask for more. We pray bigger prayers with confidence that He delights in our dependence on Him.
So in summary: the way you give back to God is by taking more and asking more. Stop trying to impress God with your efforts. Start impressing Him with your expectations.
πππ Key takeaways:
The way to give back to God is by taking more, not by trying to repay Him
God is glorified when we approach Him with expectation rather than obligation
We should pray bigger prayers with confidence that God delights in our dependence on Him
