Expect God to Deliver: Lessons from Abraham’s Waiting

Discover how Abraham’s posture of rest and expectation brought God’s promises to life.

✅✅✅ Here's what's on the agenda:

We are looking at Genesis 18:1, which says, “And the Lord appeared to him (Abraham) by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day.” This verse has the first mention of the verb sat (which is derived from sit). The first of anything in the Bible is always significant!

This verse has so much in it. Firstly, the oaks of Mamre—oaks represent strength, Mamre means strength, and Abraham is sitting, which is a posture of rest. So we could read this as Abraham rested in the strength of strength. Now, this is the posture we want to be in.

The verse goes on to say that Abraham was sitting at the front of his tent. If you did not want to be disturbed, you would sit at the back or in the middle of the tent. However, if you sit at the front, you are expecting something, so Abraham rested with expectation.

Finally, the verse ends with “the heat of the day,” which is the hottest point of the day—the most undesirable point of the day. At this point, people would not approach the tent, yet Abraham still waited with expectation. This means that at the most undesirable times, we have to expect God to come through. At the darkest times, the worst, the hottest point of the day, we have to expect God to deliver us because He will!

The next verse goes on to say that three men showed up, and that is when God came through to prophesy that Abraham would have a son.

🔑🔑🔑 Key takeaways:

  • Rest in God’s Strength: Abraham’s posture at the “oaks of Mamre” shows us the importance of resting in God’s strength.

  • Expect God’s Deliverance: Abraham’s choice to sit at the front of his tent reflects a heart of expectation, even during the toughest times.

  • God Comes Through: At the hottest point of the day—when times are most challenging—God showed up to fulfil His promise to Abraham.
